After nine months of development, Midjourney has been elevated to a new level. You’re going to adore this new version, and it’s already live!
Images generated with Midjourney are now indistinguishable from actual photographs, with details like wrinkles, folds, red eyes, and skin texture rendered perfectly.
Let’s see everything new in Midjourney v6.
How to enable Midjourney v6
Remember to switch the settings in Midjourney to v6 using the prompt below.
Prompt: /settings
Now let’s delve into the new and upgraded features.
Feature #1 Higher Image Resolution
I wasn’t exaggerating when I said that now you won’t be able to distinguish generated images from real photos. Midjourney v6 has a maximum resolution of 2048 × 2048 pixels, which is almost twice as much as the previous version. It has more precise adherence to prompts and the ability to use over 350 words in prompts.
For example, you can specify colors and other details. It understands prompt suggestions for placing objects in specific parts of the composition. And it does all this much better than previous versions.
However, it was noted that Midjourney v6 is more sensitive to prompts, so now it’s better to avoid words like ‘photorealistic, 4k, 8k’ — just using the style raw is enough.
Prompt: An elegant mature woman, with a close-up portrait style. Emphasize the facial features and emotions with details, while gently blurring the background. She looks at the camera
Both results are astounding. However, look at the detailed portrayal of the woman in V6. It captures wrinkles, lighting, hair, eyes, and even the camera’s focus on foreground objects with remarkable details.
Alright, let’s take a look at the animal paintings.
Prompt: Husky puppy in an autumn forest. Evening time
I didn’t specify further details, yet the image on the left rendered a more detailed puppy, considering the light fibers and even creating a blur effect as if this photo was captured with an 18–55 lens on a Canon camera.
And what about food?
Prompt: Sandwich with greens, cheese and red fish
Perhaps I was typing this prompt while I was hungry. The image on the left looks more appetizing and detailed. The image on the right cut off too much of the fish ;)
Feature #2 Drawing the text
Drawing text has always been a challenge for Midjourney. In all its previous versions, it was impossible to render text. It always turned out to be incomprehensible.
This issue has been addressed in the new version, providing a significant relief for designers.
Let’s give it a try.
Prompt: Christmas cookie box with “Merry Christmas” written on it
I made several attempts to get Midjourney 5.2 to draw the required text, but it didn’t work. Midjourney v6, on the other hand, did a great job and included the text in all the images.
However, it’s worth checking because sometimes it makes mistakes in a word or places the caption on the cookie instead of on the box.
Another example.
Prompt: A small cosy restaurant in Italy. There are flowers around the entrance door and tables nearby. The restaurant has a big “Best Pizza” sign. Night time.
Midjourney v5.2 tried, but it didn’t work. Midjourney v6 successfully handled this task once again.
Prompt: A glass bottle of Fanta 0.5 ml, inside red liquid and on the bottle is a sticker “Fanta”, no background
Feature #3 Painting hands and fingers
This has been a major issue in Midjourney, similar to the challenge of drawing text. Midjourney v5.2 sometimes produced mutant hands with several extra fingers, but in Midjourney v6, this issue has been handled, and you can see a standard set of fingers.
Prompt: Elegant female hands in close-up. Neat manicure in a nude color. On the ring finger, a silver ring with emerald stones around it
I have to be honest and say that Midjourney v5.2 also generated hands with a standard number of fingers several times, but most of the generations resulted in six fingers or more.
Note: Midjourney v5.2 often forgot that I requested a ring only on the ring finger with emerald stones around it. This version doesn’t fully understand prompts and inconsistently draws the correct number of fingers. Midjourney v6, on the other hand, always drew the standard number of fingers and consistently included details like the ring on the ring finger and the emerald stones.
Feature #4 New Upscales
There are two new upscale options: ‘Upscale Subtle’ and ‘Upscale Creative’.
‘Upscale Subtle’ will produce a photo in higher resolution, essentially maintaining the same picture. ‘Upscale Creative’ will offer different poses and visualizations, while keeping the same idea and colors.
Prompt: A woman’s look in the rearview mirror in a car. Only the eyes are visible. They are blue color. The photo conveys calm.
Between ‘Upscale Subtle’ and the original, there’s almost no difference. The only changes are the slight alteration of wrinkles and skin tone. However, the difference between the original and ‘Upscale Creative’ is more noticeable: wrinkles are removed, hair is cleared from the face, skin is smoothed, and red capillaries in the eyes are eliminated. The photo looks as though it has undergone professional editing by a photographer.
Feature #5 Increased Texture Details
With the enhanced details in Midjourney v6, it’s now possible to create backgrounds for websites, presentations, or design backdrops, which is very convenient and eliminates the need to download stock images.
Midjourney can now create a variety of detailed shots, ranging from water glares or animal skin textures to abstract drawings.
Prompt: Abstract art style, texture resembling gold with fluid acrylic technique, vibrant summer hues --ar 4:3
